Sleep-Deprived EEG (Electroencephalography)
What to expect:
The test takes approximately one (1) hour (set up, running the exam, removal of electrodes, cleaning the head). The Sleep-Deprived EEG measures electrical signals and brainwave patterns that are emitted from your brain. You will have approximately twenty (20) electrodes glued to your scalp. After the examination, the glue may remain in your hair and be challenging to wash out. Please be advised that it may take multiple washes to completely remove the glue residue from your hair and scalp. In order to obtain the best quality examination, you will be asked to lie still with minimal movement for approximately thirty (30) minutes.

Patient Preparation:
-
Please make sure that you arrive at our Reston office location on time for your appointment. Exams are scheduled every hour, on the hour. If you are late, you will be asked to reschedule.
-
On the day of your test, make sure that your hair is clean (shampooed), free of hair products of any kind, and completely dry when you arrive. If your hair is damp and/or contains hair products such as hairspray, oils, mousse, or gel, the electrodes will not stick to your scalp properly.
-
Please plan to have three (3) hours LESS sleep than you normally would. You must be sleep-deprived for this test. If you only sleep three (3) or four (4) hours nightly on average, there is no need to reduce your sleep time.
-
Please do not take any sleep medications the night before your appointment.
-
Please do not take any ADHD medications on the day of the exam.
-
Take all other medications as prescribed, unless otherwise stated by your provider.
-
Please do not consume caffeine 12 hours prior to the appointment.
-
If the patient requires sedation and requires flavoring, please ask your pharmacist. Do not dilute the sedating medication with juice or any other beverage.
-
Please contact your insurance company to receive an estimate on what cost(s) you will be responsible for. We do not check cost estimates. The CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code for the test is 95816.
